Wakonda Elementary School is located at 4845 Curtis Avenue. Wakonda gets its name from a Native American word which refers to the "Great Spirit" who was the provider of all things needed for a happy life, including land, rain, and sunlight. Currently, Wakonda Elementary serves approximately 306 students, from pre-kindergarten through the sixth grade. As an Academy School, Wakonda offers small class sizes of approximately 15 students in kindergarten through grade three, and approximately 20 students in grades four through six. In 1993, Wakonda was selected to be the first school in Nebraska to be designated as a schoolwide Title I building. This designation resulted in additional support for all instructional areas. With the emphasis on reading skills, expressive writing, and application of the scientific process, the Wakonda staff, students, and community focus their efforts to have all students be successful in these areas. The building focus is character education. Character traits are emphasized and taught throughout the school year. Wakonda recently underwent a $7 million dollar addition and renovation plan! - Omaha Public Schools
