My name is Mrs. Wahonick and I am the School Counselor at Wakonda Elementary. As an elementary counselor I am involved in a number of activities for the benefit of all students, parents and staff.
One of these activities is classroom group guidance. I regularly visit each classroom and teach weekly lessons to ALL children Kindergarten through 5th grade. These lessons range from friendship to bullying behaviors, social skills to study skills, career choices to drug and alcohol-free choices to proper manners and beyond.
Another aspect of my role is leading small groups. Small groups are an opportunity for a small group of students to meet approximately four to six times to discuss a particular subject that they have in common with the other group members. Topics range widely but some of the most common are: anger management, social and friendship skills, grief and study skills.
I also meet one-on-one with students during the school day. This could be a one-time meeting to help the child deal with a pressing concern or regularly monitoring a child's behavior or academics.
I am excited to be working with Wakonda students on their social/emotional skills and enjoy the opportunity to help them follow their goals to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. I also serve as the building coordinator for the TeamMates program and the Operation School Bell program. I am available to visit with parents during the school day and can be reached by clicking on the link in Contacts to the left, by email at firstname.lastname@example.org, or by phone at 531-299-8830.
Thank you for entrusting me with your child. I look forward to a safe, healthy, fun, and inspiring year for all of us!
